What's to see ...? - Authorities at the Mediterranean Architecture Centre in Hania, Crete, are at a loss to explain why vandals paid an overnight visit, simply to steal the CCTV cameras. Hopes of recovering any images from the system are remote, given that on the admission of the centres director, the cameras are only ever switched on when the centre is hosting a collection or exhibition. - source Ekathimerini.com - 3rd April 2006

There's something in the air - Using the latest 'Mesh' wireless technology, five Sheriffs offices in Florida, USA, have commissioned "tactical wireless surveillance systems" allowing the portable use of video surveillance cameras, linked to network terminals located at the control centres, and also accessible to onboard monitors fitted within the police cruisers - source Govtech.net - 3rd April 2006

Have CCTV ...won't travel! - Residents of Inverclyde in Scotland, must have been absolutely delighted when their Local Authority bought a new £ 130,000 CCTV van, in June 2005. The only slight problem is that not having the £ 50,000 needed to operate the vehicle over the following twelve months, it's thus far remained parked up in the councils Pottery Street depot. The Deputy Justice Minister of the Scottish Executive, has described the situation as a "scandal" - source The Greenock Telegraph - 5th April 2006

Paradise lost - For many people, the mere mention of a trip to the Maldives, conjures up visions of a tropical island paradise. For the residents however, news that the local police are planning to install CCTV cameras throughout the capital Male', is unlikely to be as warmly welcomed as the tourists. - source Minivan News - 6th April 2006

Time gentlemen please ... - In a bid to curb the serious problem of underage drinking, authorities in the city of Edinburgh are proposing that every premises selling alcohol will in future be compelled to install CCTV. Whilst there is broad political support for the move, shop owners reviewing the potential cost to their businesses, have been less than enthusiastic - source The Evening News - 7th April 2006

Where's the catch ... ? - It's been reported that Police Officers are so overworked, they don't have time to review video recordings which may have caught villains in the act. In an investigation by the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, nine out of 52 constabularies questioned, admitted that in the case of a burglary to commercial premises, they would not necessarily be able to review the CCTV recordings. - source telegraph.co.uk - 9th April 2006

Cashing in on cameras - For the good folks of Sharon Hill in Philadelphia, round the clock protection of ATM cash machines has now become a reality, with a new ordinance (law) requiring all operators to fit CCTV security cameras. Failure to maintain a working system, could result in a significant fine, or up to three months behind bars. - source The Daily Times - 11th April 2006

Hi tech twitching ... - 87 year old Greta Glover has spent her entire life indulging her passion for bird watching, but when she recently took up residence at the Cargenholm House care home near Dumfries, staff were concerned that she shouldn't lose out on her hobby. As well as fitting bird baths and feeders in view of her room, they also installed a CCTV camera in a bird box, so she can watch the birdies directly from her television. The Care Commission which overseas the operation of premises throughout the U.K., has praised the home for it's imaginative approach to maintaining it's residents' interest - source BBC News - 13th April 2006

Licence ... what licence ...? - On a legal technicality, managers at Birmingham City Councils CCTV Control Room, narrowly managed to avoid losing access to more than 600 cameras, located in stations and car parks across the West Midlands. Following the March 20th deadline for licensing all Control Room Operators monitoring third party CCTV cameras, it was discovered that their personnel were still awaiting vital certification from the Security Industry Authority, which would have allowed them to continue monitoring the cameras installed by the local transportation company Centro. The word on the streets - In the first step towards implementing a US$ 9 million dollar plan to install 500 CCTV cameras throughout the city, New York Police have quietly installed their first operating units on the mean streets of Brooklyn. A request for a further $ 81.5 million in Federal Grants, would if provided, allow a substantial roll out of street surveillance, modelled on London's existing "Ring of Steel" systems . - source The Washington Post - 17th April 2006

Driving ahead on safety - The Stagecoach UK Bus company have placed an order for £ 1.2 million worth of digital CCTV systems, to be fitted to all 473 new buses being brought into operation by the company this year. The contract to supply has been placed with specialist Lancashire based supplier Look CCTV - source Blackpool Today - 24th April 2006

Criminals cash in on cameras - News from the USA, where Chicago's drive towards city wide surveillance, has seen a commitment to install a further seventy CCTV cameras next month, paid for out of the proceeds of crime. At least 50 of the new wireless cameras will be located in high crime areas, and then redeployed at new positions as required. - source The Chicago SunTimes - 26th April 2006

Playing a waiting game - Authorities in Greater Manchester are so fed up with continued vandalism in the city's bus shelters, they've announced plans to deploy £ 60,000 worth of CCTV equipment at the worst affected locations. Up to eight cameras will be fitted on to an individual shelter, and it's hoped that the cameras will be in place over the next few weeks. - source Grt.
