BFi OPTiLAS Ltd ASSIST TEMPUS TO IMPROVE BROADBAND WIRELESS NETWORK IN THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM

BFi OPTiLAS is pleased to confirm that its partner, Tempus, has reached agreement with the City of Birmingham to expand and upgrade the broadband wireless network currently operating in the Aston area of Birmingham.

The Aston Pride network first went live in 2005 and was funded by the EU and Birmingham Council.  The project, led by Digital Birmingham in partnership with the local authority, support groups and IT companies achieved national recognition in 2008 when the then School Minister Jim Knight said "This partnership between local development funds and schools has resulted in hundreds of families going online. The results have been staggering."

In a 2006 Government survey Aston was identified as a significant 'digital divide' community because of its very low levels of home computer ownership (15% of homes against the then national average of 89%). This was recognised as hindering children's academic potential and affecting the employability of adults.

Today however it provides broadband to 700 homes and 11 schools around Aston, an inner-City area of Birmingham which has a population of around 30,000 people spread across four square miles.  By 2011 nearly half of all homes in Aston will be connected. The families have agreed to a weekly donation for internet access and a package of support material that includes adult training programmes and subscription to several pupil learning platforms in a variety of subject areas. In the process of negotiating licensing access to these platforms and programs the concept of 'Community Licences' was introduced. The family donations will be a major contributor to the sustainability of the project.

However, from 2011 the network will need to be completely self-financed and so Tempus, the integrator which built and maintains the network, and the council decided to upgrade and expand the network so that additional applications – and revenue streams – will be possible.

In addition to making broadband accessible to the schools and homes in the area, the new network will be used to enhance community services, with wireless CCTV around Aston for the council and local police force to improve public safety and connection to the Intelligent Traffic Systems in the area.  Tempus also plans to become a full service ISP and offer commercial broadband services to other organisations in Aston.

Alvarion’s base stations from BreezeACCESS® VL product line at 5.8 GHz spectrum will be deployed across Aston.  These base stations will communicate with over one thousand BreezeACCESS VL subscriber units in schools and homes across Aston.  The Alvarion equipment will replace the existing network equipment which had reliability and black spot problems.  Ian Stevens, Sales Manager from BFi OPTiLAS, demonstrated to Tempus that the Alvarion equipment would solve the current issues and provide Quality of Service.  By working closely with Tempus, BFi OPTiLAS is confident that the Alvarion model can be rolled out across other similar community projects.

Eitan Oppenhaim, Alvarion’s General Manager of Europe said:  “Our wireless broadband kit is being used to provide fast and reliable broadband in urban and rural areas across the UK. We are helping councils, businesses and ISPs to build networks with sound business cases”.

A number of additional British towns and cities have selected Alvarion for its ability to deliver a complete portfolio of superior WiMAX and broadband wireless systems for licensed and license exempt frequency bands. These networks provide broadband access to various kinds of organisations including city highways, residential homes, businesses and schools.
