Brivo Relies on Comprehensive Solution from Dell for New OVR Innovation

Collaboration results in integrated, online video recorder product launch in record time

Bethesda, MD, November 17, 2009 – Brivo Systems LLC, the leader in Software-as-a-Service applications for security management, today announced that Brivo’s successful, ongoing roll-out of OVR WebService™ benefited greatly from a highly productive technology collaboration with Dell.

Brivo completed this major new addition to its award-winning Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) access control solution—an integrated, online video recorder (OVR) that streams IP video from customer locations to a secure Web hosting facility—and launched OVR in April of this year. The company built the video hosting platform in response to a large, under-served market for Video-as-a-Service, particularly among small businesses and geographically distributed enterprises with widely dispersed assets. “OVR WebService is the first and only fully integrated, online access control plus video service,” explained Steven Van Till, Brivo President and CEO, “and we’ve made this technology available at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated DVR.”

Dell was an essential technology partner on the OVR project. Recognizing numerous IT pain points, Dell designed and incorporated several solutions for the project. Working within a very tight deadline, Dell worked as part of the infrastructure design team and provided the server and storage engineering expertise necessary to meet Brivo’s performance requirements.

In order to tackle the problems of storing massive amounts of video, Dell’s EqualLogic PS5500E frameless Storage Area Network (SAN) was incorporated—offering better performance at one-third the cost of a traditional SAN. Using IP-based technology, the need for the Fiber Switches, Fiber Controllers and their associated costs was eliminated, as were expensive licensing fees. The frameless SAN was designed to grow beyond the capacity and throughput of a traditional SAN.

Brivo also required a solution that would consolidate server management and allow for rapid capacity increases. Dell proposed an M1000E Blade Enclosure and M805 blades in a virtual cluster to reduce power requirements and maximize expandability. After deploying the Enclosure, along with Dell’s virtualization recommendations, Brivo was able to rapidly deploy servers, reduce power consumption, and maintain the ability to expand capacity.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of the Dell Blade Enclosure, with the frameless SAN, was the achievement of a dynamic infrastructure. In addition to removing the issue of having to cable the server, the network was designed to handle increased bandwidth as well as future bandwidth requirements, and the modular design has made expansion and upgrades much easier for Brivo to manage.

Dell’s approach to the design, build, and deployment was intuitive and seamless; and both companies worked together in all aspects of the process including demonstrations to validate each component of the solution. As Brivo looks to future expansion and growth, Dell’s successful solutions with this project will pay rich dividends in this and other business ventures. “Our partners at Dell did anything and everything we needed to ensure the timely deployment and success of OVR—their contributions were outstanding,” concluded Bill Savage, Brivo Vice President of Operations.
