OPTEX DETECTORS HERALD NEW ERA FOR SECURITY COMPANY

A security company that previously relied upon traditional manned guarding services has discovered the benefits of electronic systems after using BoundaryGard external PIR detectors from Optex Europe, the leading detector business.

LRSS, a Sheffield-based independent provider of security solutions, was contracted to supply perimeter sensors to protect 19 buildings on an outdoor construction site owned by housing developer Lovell. Optex's BoundaryGard detectors turned out to be ideal for the project, as Craig Allen, Managing Director of LRSS, explains:

"At LRSS, we had been moving towards using electronic security systems for the last couple of years but were unsure about external sensors, having only ever had experience of inferior detection equipment. When I was given the opportunity to quote for this site, I was ten minutes away from refusing until I came across Compound Security Systems, which specified one of its own systems incorporating the BoundaryGard solution.

"We chose Optex's VX402, HX40 and HX80 devices integrated with Compound's RDAS GPRS system and it transpired that none of the companies I was quoting against were offering a product of the same quality, so LRSS won the contract."

Craig says that the RDAS GPRS system incorporating Optex detectors has proved to be far more reliable than previous solutions he has encountered, which were only suitable for internal applications: "Optex is the only brand of detectors that Compound will work with, and with good reason; the BoundaryGard detectors mean that I can be sure, when an activation is triggered, that something has genuinely occurred at the site.

"I have been so confident in the reliability of this system that I offered the client four hours of free site attendance per month, and so far we have only needed to provide one and a half hours. We have had nothing but praise from the client, and I have just quoted on another project where the cost savings for the customer will equate to more than 55% compared to a static guard."

Compound Security Systems was established in 2005 to launch the Mosquito Anti-Loitering Device but has since then expanded into the intruder detection market and supplies high quality, reliable and police-approved portable security systems.

According to Simon Morris, Commercial Director of Compound, the company has been supplying Optex sensors for a number of years: "The reason that we use Optex sensors is because, quite simply, they are the best and the most reliable in the world.

“We buy Optex detectors and we use them combined with sensors that we manufacture ourselves, which means modifying the Optex equipment so that it is radio frequency capable and can integrate wirelessly with our security control system.”

Compound’s RDAS GPRS system is a self-contained, battery-powered mobile security system, making it an ideal solution for installation where no power or telecoms are available or for temporary installation. The system’s batteries will last for over a year, whilst the detectors’ batteries can run for more than two. In addition to being a fully ARC monitored system, users can also access an online log via Compound’s secure servers 24/7 and monitor the status of each system and its networked detectors in real time. ACPO Secured by Design, it is the only external security system approved and used by the UK police.

"So many PIR detectors are completely unsuitable for securing external compounds like building sites, yet the traditional method of manned guarding is an expensive solution,” concludes Simon. “By using our RDAS GPRS system combined with Optex detectors, this end user is benefiting from a highly reliable and extremely cost effective security system that can be used again and again, on any site.”

The HX-80 is one of the latest in Optex's series of proven BoundaryGard external sensors including wireless options, and is ideal for a site environment such as this one, says Paul Nicholas, Divisional Manager for

Optex Europe: "Both of the wireless HX models feature anti-masking and small animal immunity, and deliver all of the benefits of easier installation and dramatically reduced installation time and total costs.

"Similarly, the VX402 employs multi layer detection technology developed by Optex to improve target recognition that prevents false activations from small animals and birds. Two discrete detection areas are created and only when an intruder is detected in both areas is an alarm output provided."
