Vemotion Highly Commended in the A|D|S Equipment and Technology Innovation Awards

~ Judges expressed a high level of interest in innovative low bandwidth video solution ~

North Yorkshire, UK – 22nd March 2011 – Vemotion Interactive, specialists in live video transmission over low bandwidth connections, today announced  a pioneering CCTV system in Leeds that uses the Vemotion Interactive technology has been “Highly Commended” at the A|D|S Equipment Technology and Innovation Awards.

The judges expressed praise for the project at Leedswatch, a CCTV operation run by Leeds City Council Community Safety, to enhance its support of West Yorkshire Police operations at key football matches.

The A|D|S Equipment Technology and Innovation Awards, now in their sixth year, are supported by the Home Office Scientific Development Branch, HOSDB.

These awards are made to fully recognise the unparalleled capability of UK Industry in enabling leading innovation to safeguard the UK, as well as making the world in which we live a safer place.

To be eligible, the relevant equipment or technology must have originated within the last two years from a UK registered company and must be in use with a UK Police Force or Law Enforcement Agency.

Leeds Community Safety CCTV provides and operates one of the largest CCTV camera networks in the country with a network of over 385 cameras, covering 240 square miles, helping to make Leeds city a safer place.

Vemotion has developed a powerful and highly efficient encoder which enables quality real time video to be transmitted at low bit rates.

Use of a mobile CCTV van is a simple way to introduce a solution where operation costs can be shared between venues and awareness capabilities can be set up ahead of time and rapidly moved to any location where they are needed, therefore increasing the efficiency of the operation and allowing resources to be allocated in the correct way.

The limiting factor has been the ability to get the images captured by the CCTV cameras in the van to the right people to take swift and timely action.  Transmitting large images over mobile networks has been either too inefficient or too costly to make the solution viable – until now.

The solution provided by Vemotion provides an effective and efficient means of streaming images back to an existing central control room over public GSM networks.  The images can be distributed to key personnel over their existing mobile phones, laptops or PDAs, or to other control rooms across the region.

The Leedswatch system includes both on-street public surveillance cameras and also operates mobile CCTV vans. These vehicles can be called out to areas where they are needed and send images back to the main control room, from where they can be forwarded to the relevant authorities throughout the city.

The system is already in use extensively by the police who have a continuous presence at the control room to track criminal activity providing valuable evidence to support rapid convictions and reduce the cost of police operations and the use of police time.

All cameras are linked back to the central control room where they are monitored in real time, 24 hours a day. This service has proven its value to the community.  In the cold weather experienced recently a person was identified as being in distress, monitored using a CCTV camera and the local emergency services called in to give assistance, preventing a possible death from hyperthermia.

In another incident, operators alerted police to a man preparing to jump off one of Leeds’ highest bridges.  The police responded quickly and were able to drag the man back to safety.

The system has practical applications in monitoring areas known to be at risk for instance from fly tipping or vandalism providing potential savings of thousands of pounds to the local community.

We are delighted to have been recognised by ADS for our contribution to this project,” said Stewart McCone, Managing Director of Vemotion Interactive, “The Leedswatch project has been very interesting and we are delighted that solutions making use of low bandwidth video are receiving recognition in the market.”

Vemotion will be at the HOSDB 2011 event 22-24 March 2011 Farnborough, Hampshire on stand E55.
