STRATEGIC CCTV SOLUTIONS HELP EAST COAST MAIN LINE ACHIEVE SECURE STATIONS STATUS

Quadrant Security Group (QSG) a subsidiary of Quadnetics Group, has helped the East Coast Main Line Company achieve industry recognition for its commitment to improve security and reduce crime. The operator has been awarded ‘Secure Stations Status’ for its 12 managed stations along the 936 miles of route it serves, thanks to work to upgrade and expand the CCTV network protecting the line.

The East Coast Main Line Company operates the main north-south rail artery on the Eastern side of Britain, spanning from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley and beyond. As well as carrying almost 19 million passengers each year on East Coast’s high-speed intercity services, the line is also a major UK freight route. Ensuring the safety and security of the line and those using it, is a key priority for the operator.

QSG was called in to carry out initial assessment work on the line’s existing CCTV infrastructure covering 12 manned stations and three principle depots in London, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Stuart Graham, QSG Technical Sales Manager, explained: “Our initial assessment revealed some inconsistency in the approach towards CCTV recording and a product legacy, linked to previous franchise holders, of assorted makes and models of key equipment such as Command and Control and Video Recording.

These inconsistencies were not only affecting overall performance but also presented distinct challenges in terms of introducing new products to the system due to the closed protocols in place. We discussed our findings with East Coast Mainline and worked in partnership with them to develop a bespoke solution to maximise quality and consistency across the network.”

A total of 91 new cameras, incorporating improved lens capabilities, were specified and installed across the 12 East Coast managed stations, along with new Digital Video Recorders to support the increased infrastructure.

QSG identified and removed redundant equipment that was hindering efficient usage, and ensured existing functional technology was fully integrated with the new CCTV systems, enabling evidential quality footage from each station to be recorded locally. QSG’s approach also lay the foundations for fast, efficient installation and integration of new CCTV technology should expansion be required in the future.

The work played a key role in East Coast Mainline achieving Secure Stations Status, awarded by the British Transport Police to operators that improve passenger and staff safety through implementing and improving crime and anti-social behaviour reduction measures.

East Coast Stations and Property Director Tim Hedley-Jones said: “We’re delighted that all 12 East Coast managed stations have achieved the Secure Stations accreditation – it means extra peace of mind for our passengers and staff, and demonstrates our commitment to creating a safer and more secure environment.”

Another key element of the upgrade work undertaken by QSG was training. On-site training on the CCTV control systems at each station was provided for operators and supervisors to enable them to maximise the interface capabilities of the technology provided in order to ensure efficient, effective monitoring and evidence capture.

QSG continues to provide on-going support and maintenance for East Coast Mainline, working in partnership with the operator to ensure it continues to set best practice in station and rail network CCTV safety and security.
