One particular set up, lets say for example using CCTV cameras as a visible deterrent (overt) to street crime, may have absolutely no effect on reducing alcohol or drugs related offences, particularly if the offender is so out of their head that they cannot even see that there are cameras watching them.

Whilst there are no set guidelines for appropriate periods of assessment, ideally data should be collected for a minimum twelve month period, with sufficient information relating to the premises / site, and surrounding areas.

For larger sites, it would certainly demonstrate a commitment to best practice if this type of detailed evaluation is routinely scheduled for review the same time every year.

Once a comprehensive Crime Audit has been produced, it is then necessary to go on to step 2, which involves carrying out the detailed "Risk Assessment Survey" (RAS) >>>.

Having previously considered the obvious advantages of using a 'Crime Audit' to help in planning an effective video surveillance system, there is another good reason for doing it properly.

If a proper scaled points system is adopted for ‘crime scoring’ the previous level of offences, it becomes much easier to measure (and carry out a statistical analysis of ...) the apparent effectiveness of any crime reduction initiatives (including CCTV), after they’ve been introduced.

Whilst this approach may seem excessive in some situations, the fact is that the various ways in which surveillance cameras can be applied, offers a broad range of options, and in turn variable possible outcomes, depending on the nature of the problem and the eventual solution deployed.
