Welcome to the
Closed Circuit Television - The vital weapon?
An exclusive article by Doktor Jon
The United Kingdom is widely regarded as the CCTV capital of the world, so is it unreasonable to accept the old adage that there's safety in numbers?
For the average Londoner going about their ordinary daily lives, the last seven days have been anything other than ordinary. On Saturday July 2nd 2005, the day after Britain took over the Presidency of the European Union, the eyes of the world focussed on Hyde Park, the venue for "Live 8", the greatest global musical event in history, and the start of one of the biggest extended security operations of our time.
With hopes high as the "Make Poverty History" campaign reached it's peak on Tuesday, and the leaders of the worlds most powerful nations gathered for the G8 summit at Gleneagles, it was the nail biting climax to Wednesdays announcement of London winning the bid to host the 2012 Olympics, which set off a chain of events and emotions, the like of which would be barely credible if written into a Hollywood movie script.
As the nation celebrated, faceless individuals were finalising their plans to wreak death and destruction, in a way many have long since dreaded, but few have dared to imagine. In a period of less than 24 hours, mass euphoria turned to total dismay and collective grief, as four explosive devices detonated in the morning rush hour of Thursday 7th July 2005.
Three Underground 'tube' trains and a double decker bus, torn apart by acts of unspeakable depravity, in a city which over the years has become well used to the misguided objectives of self righteous terrorists. And yet, the barbarity of these attacks on innocent Londoners, demonstrates a callous and calculated intent, the personification of evil, where lives can be taken, not in the name of a cause but simply because they can.
The threat to public safety has long been discussed, but with the proof now so devastatingly self evident, what are the priorities for coming to terms with an enemy living, and operating within our very midst.
As one would expect, both Police and Security Services have been urgently tasked with the identification and apprehension of the perpetrators; but given the sheer scale of the operation, is it reasonable to believe that total co-operation and assistance is going to be forthcoming from every agency.
