Doktor Jons Guide to the "Use and Application of CCTV"
This is part of the Information Section - How this site came to be ...

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

- So how did Doktor Jon get started? -

Doktor Jon had an idea ...

Phase 1 of this project was officially launched on 1st June 2004, to provide a truly unique insight into "The Use and Application of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)" ... but how did it all begin?

Well, once upon a time, in a not very distant land, Doktor Jon was plying his trade as a purveyor of fine CCTV systems, with smiling customers who had simple, cosy little problems. Whatever the job, DJ was here to help; but as the days grew shorter and his hair grew longer, he realised something was not quite right.

" 'ere mate, I'm gonna need to pick yer brains a bit ", were the cheery words that greeted him almost every single time he picked up the telephone. As the 'brain picking' sessions increased in both intensity and duration, Doktor Jon thought that he'd really have to do something about it .... and quick!! Early retirement? ..... not really an option; relocate to the South of France or California? ..... too much like fun. It was whilst taking a leisurely stroll in the park, that it suddenly hit him out of the blue..... don't you just hate it when those damned frisbees smack you between the eyes!!

Some years ago, a survey was conducted to find out the views of CCTV manufacturers represented in the U.K. The questions were wide ranging, but one overwhelming opinion that stuck in Doktor Jons memory, was on the subject of information. When asked to comment on the statement, 'There is a real need for end users to be able to easily obtain good quality independent advice', would it surprise you to know that 92% of manufacturers agreed. In fact with another question, 84% thought that the CCTV industry should be responsible for educating their customers.

Anyway, based on those indicators and the fact that Doktor Jon couldn't cope with much more 'brain picking', the idea for a free access website providing information about CCTV, was born. Having set aside, about eight weeks to get the project up and running ... eighteen months and twenty nine nervous breakdowns later, June 2004 was crunch time for the launch!

Almost the entire contents of this site (that's now well over fifteen hundred pages to you!) have been lovingly written, photographed, video recorded, and designed by Doktor Jons own fair hands, so if you like what you see, it's all been worth it; and if you don't like what you see .... well, tough!
Doktor Jon does not claim to be a web designer, so if you're not keen on the look of the site, send him lots and lots of money and he'll pay a professional to do it properly!!!

On a more sensible note, the site has been deliberately designed to be simple and clutter free. Absolutely no cookies (except on the Forum), no 'Flash', no pop ups, just oodles of information and experience, which you simply won't find anywhere else. (You'll need to set your browser to 1024 x 768 to see the pages correctly; any less and you'll be scrolling for ever!)

You can navigate using the (upper) 'Section Links' box, and (lower) 'Site Links' box, located on the left hand side of each page, or the Gateway as the main portal, or if there is a particular topic or product / manufacturer you're looking for, there is also a Quickfind Page, or the main Site Index (which is currently split over 3 pages ), should all help to point you in the right direction.

Although this site was officially launched on June 1st 2004, it is very much a "work in progress", so if any bits are missing or the odd page could do with a bit of a tidy up, my apologies for any shortcomings.
If you find any broken links, or have any great ideas or suggestions please don't hesitate to get in touch - your comments will always be welcome - email to:

I hope you find the site interesting and informative... at the very least!

Footnote:- The 'Helpdesk' service was launched on the 1st June 2005 to celebrate the sites first anniversary, the weekly 'News Service' commenced at the beginning of August 2005, Doktor Jons CCTV Forum was officially launched on the 21st November 2006, the TRUSTED © CCTV Improvement Campaign was launched on the 16th April 2007 and the latest innovation, the VIPER CCTV Camera evaluation service commenced on 1st October 2008

To date, the project now has over 1,620pages, with 453 original photographs, and the site has to date welcomed visitors from 144 countries, along with government, education and military hits, and that's just what DJ is aware of .... so far!.
