Laser Link CCTV Signal Transmission - continued

Although an extremely useful option, this type of system should not be immediately regarded as an absolute cure-all for many of those awkward little situations.

Generally speaking, throwing a video signal across a main road, or railway tracks, or even airport runways, is extremely easy to set up, provided when choosing the power output for a particular distance, some allowance needs to be made for exceptional weather related problems, such as thick fog, snow and driving rain.

As the system uses light as the signal carrier, it doesn’t require any licencing, and unlike microwave, with only insignificant localised light scatter from the projected beam, any number of units can be fitted in close proximity, resulting in a minimised risk of ‘cross talk’ under exceptional environmental conditions.

Indeed, whereas microwave normally only provides four available frequencies (@ 2.4GHz in the U.K.), any number of laser units can be set up, provided of course, you have an understanding bank manager.

One obvious benefit from this technique is its inherent level of security; with hardly any residual signal scatter, it’s actually quite difficult to intercept the video signal, without compromising the transmitted link (a similar situation to 'active' infra red beams used in alarm systems).

Doktor Jon mentioned earlier on that these systems are generally quite expensive, but when compared to the costs for alternative transmission techniques, which may for example include copper cable being ‘dug in’ through underground ducts, it does start to look rather more attractive as a bolt on option.

It is perhaps unfortunate that due to the overall cost, these systems have never really taken off big time, and yet the potential market for affordable ‘plug and play’ transmission links, particularly for short range applications between say 10 - 75 metres, is actually quite considerable; manufacturers please take note!
