CCTV Signal Transmission by telephone - continued

With entry level PSTN, we’re probably looking at or slightly above basic ‘webcam’ quality, whereas with ISDN and ADSL links, the options for improving overall video quality increase enormously.

There is no question that as this technology has now become more easily affordable, there will be a veritable explosion in the way we access remote images, over the next few years.

Both in a commercial environment and in the humble home, an individuals ability to remotely view all those things which are important to them, offers considerable peace of mind, and yet a further level of control which was perhaps unthinkable, just a couple of decades ago.

For the security industry, the longterm development of ‘visual verification’ products and services, offers an exciting area for future investment.

With the recent rapid development of mobile phone (cellphone) technology and in particular 3G networks, video streaming is already here, and the possibilities for integrating CCTV and security systems into an openly accessible architecture, will provide new opportunities for addressing common problems at vastly reduced cost.

The reliance of many communities on hugely expensive remotely monitored CCTV cameras, may to some degree be undermined, by the increasingly affordable option of individuals taking responsibility for protecting their own property, by the simplest of means.

As such, the longerterm development of complex Closed Circuit TV systems, may yet see a change in direction, with more emphasis on Open Circuit Restricted Access (OCRA) installations, that make far greater use of telephone, internet and wireless technologies.

It remains to be seen how well the CCTV manufacturers can rise to the challenge of developing market ready products, that will truly revolutionise the way we think about protecting life and property.
