Guide to Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

DUMMY CAMERAS
- continued -

When it comes to choosing a dummy camera for indoor use, you have to be a little more careful. Once again, their are lots of rubbish ones on the market, and if you do ever feel tempted, Doktor Jon would suggest that you’re better off having one without a flashing LED; real cameras just don’t have them.

Now, their are a few miniature dome housings without cameras inside, and they do look like a proper ‘mini dome’ camera, but as most people don’t recognise these designs as CCTV cameras anyway, it’s perhaps not an ideal option, just yet.

Once again, a working camera case without any electronics, is the preferred option, particularly as their are a number of large and respected manufacturers, who now offer selected models without any internal workings.

Be sure to use a proper camera bracket, and connect up short lengths of cable, which can be terminated inside an adjacent surface mountede pattress (or electrical back box).

Whilst you could fit a dummy lens at minimal cost, in practice a proper working (basic) manual iris lens wouldn’t add much to the price, and it makes it virtually impossible to tell the dummy from a proper working camera unit.

Many experts dismiss dummies out of hand, and yet if they are used as a supplementary device alongside a proper working CCTV system, they help to raise the profile, and therefore increase the overall deterrent effect.

In some situations where the working camera is kept deliberately covert, a dummy can be placed within the field of view of the working unit, so if it is vandalised, the deterrent may have failed, but the Evidential Quality Record system will then produce the goods to prove who actually carried out the criminal damage.

The secret for using any dummy is believability! If it looks like a toy, it’s simply not worth wasting any money on.
