Guide to Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

Everything you need to
control a CCTV system

HARDWIRED CONTROL UNITS - continued

In practice, this type of cable will support operation over a longer distance, but it’s generally good practice to both increase the conductor cross section, and also the size of the power supply output as the system is being tasked with longer distances.

It’s also very useful to connect up controllers and cameras using good quality multicore connectors at each end.

As well as making it easier to interchange equipment, it also greatly simplifies the task of fault finding, if and when you need to.

Whilst Hard Wiring is relatively high in terms of longterm reliability (after all, short of a mouse chewing through the cables .... and yes they do!), the only concerns really are the minimal component count in the power supply section (+/- 12v DC for the lens etc.) and the quality of the switches used.

In the older and somewhat larger customised 19” panel control units, the switches were ultra reliable with only the occasional indicator bulb blowing and needing replacement; fault finding is also relatively straightforward, and quite obviously fairly simple to put right, in the event that anything does actually fail.

In practical terms, despite this somewhat outdated technological approach to system operation, any well built hardwired control system installed over twenty years ago, should still be highly operable today!
