As a further development on larger and more elaborate telemetry systems, a few specialist manufacturers offer a computer based interface option, whereby the control functions and camera selection, are operable using a Touchscreen monitor. These specialist (and somewhat more expensive) computer monitors, can recognise the exact position of a finger when placed on a specific portion of the screen. So for example, by gently touching the icon for Camera 7, the system will automatically select that unit for control, and any subsequent touches, on either pan, tilt or lens functions, will result in an immediate response from the selected camera. This highly advanced control technique, is extremely user friendly, particularly if a customised Graphical User Interface (GUI) is developed, based on a diagramatic representation of the site layout. The exact position of the CCTV cameras can be shown, along with the location of any alarm equipment or sensors, and an indication of their current status. Although much of the system response can be fully automated, it still leaves plenty of scope to include and develop the camera operators reactions, as part of the overall site management process. Although these highly sophisticated systems are very simple to use, the flip side is that they are generally extremely complex in structure; and as we all know, the more there is to fail, the more likely it is to choose the perfect opportunity, to cause the maximum annoyance. For this reason alone, it is standard practice when developing a 'touch screen'control system, to include a standard Telemetry transmitter as an additional level of 'back-up'.
