Information on a wide range of housings,
The next major innovation in housing design was to look towards having removable end caps, usually fitted to a housing body constructed from extruded aluminium sections. Frequently attractive in design, but quite frankly an absolute nightmare for the poor service engineer, who had to remove (and not lose) approximately eight bolts which held on each end of the housing. Using anything less than four hands, meant that this particular job was not going to pass without the odd expletive, usually as one of the bolts slips gracefully from the fingers and drops 10 metres into a perfectly positioned large muddy puddle. The final and perhaps most innovative design, has actually been around for quite a long time now. Again using a conventional split box approach, this type of housing benefits from having a hinge incorporated into the design, either to one side or the rear. In operation, it is extremely simple to undo either a clip or screw retainer, and then swing the entire top section clear of the camera. Although generally a delight for service engineers, this design is not without its potential problems. As Doktor Jon knows to his cost, if you swing a heavy cast aluminium top section clear of the camera, be prepared for it at some point, to take it upon itself to return to its closed position when you least expect it; and if your fingers happen to be in the way at the time ..... such is life! Although camera housing designs have gradually evolved over the last thirty years or so, fundamentally they are all intended to do much the same thing; and that is keep the rain off an expensive piece of imaging equipment. As to which is overall the best .... well, you pays your money and takes your choice!.
