Guide to Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

All you need to know about lenses,
for all types of video surveillance.

If you’ve managed to absorb all the information on CCTV cameras (!),
Doktor Jon will now attempt to stroll you through the mysteries of camera lenses. For starters we’ll begin with a general guide to all the different types available, and then for the main course, progress on to some basic optical principles. With a much needed stop for indigestion tablets, we’ll finish off with a brief outline of how to get the best from a whole range of optics. Be brave my friends, we’re going in;

Dummy lenses - Dummy cameras need dummy lenses, but you don't need to be a dummy to figure out the most appropriate lens.

Barrel lenses - A whole range of miniature lenses intended for use exclusively with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) cameras.

Fixed Manual Iris lenses - Most installers won’t touch them with a barge pole, yet manual lenses are our singular most important optics.

Fixed Auto Iris lenses - Both ‘Video’ and ‘Galvo’ type automatic iris lenses are almost the industry standards .... how could this be?.

Varifocal lenses - Extremely popular amongst installers, but are they the best option for end users?

Manual Zoom lenses - Rarely used but extremely useful; what are the advantages over powerful varifocals?

Motorised Zoom lenses - Serious glass with attitude - if you need to spot moths at one hundred paces .....

Pinhole lenses - The black art of covert surveillance - and it’s pinhole lenses that make it all happen.

Photographic lenses - Put a nice chunky telephoto lens on a surveillance camera .... then pick yourself up off the floor!!

Macro lenses - Extension Tubes, Reversing Rings and Close Up adaptors, lenses that bring you closer to your subject.

Specialist lenses - Aspheric, Catadioptric, IR corrected, Germanium and a whole lot more. & Lens Accessories - Range extenders + adaptors + fun with filters (if you like that sort of thing!).
