In our modern and supposedly civilised society, it’s important to remember that what one person may regard as a shocking criminal act, another may equally consider as an acceptable form of behaviour. Whatever you do and whoever you are, you are responsible for your own actions, and long may it continue to be. The unfortunate tendency, particularly in the last few decades or so, has been for society, particularly in the guise of a democratically elected government, to adopt or introduce reams of legislation which effectively alters the balance of individual liability, towards a system of collective accountability. If you want to prevent a minority of drivers speeding, introduce traffic calming measures in the form of speed humps, tables and width restrictions - problem sorted; fewer speeding motorists, more broken cars, and an increase in days off work with back related problems. More and more, steps are taken which are intended to design out the opportunity for criminal intent, but which only serve to affect the lives of the law abiding, without any significant effect on the law defying. Now what the heck has all this to do with CCTV and Civil Liberties?
