D-TEC IS FINALIST IN FIRE EXCELLENCE AWARDS
FOR EXPORT FOCUS ON CCTV VIDEO SMOKE DETECTION IN TUNNELS

D-Tec, part of AD Group - and a world leader in CCTV camera-based Video Smoke Detection (VSD) - announces that it is a finalist in the prestigious Fire Excellence Awards, run in conjunction with the International Firex and Fire & Rescue exhibitions.

The company has been shortlisted in the key Export Innovation category for its successful deployment of VSD, which analyses images to provide early warning of fire, in a growing number of tunnel projects worldwide. Applications of note undertaken by D-Tec and highlighted in its award submission include: the landmark Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, Italian road tunnels and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.

Said Ian Moore, Managing Director of D-Tec: "We are very pleased to have reached the final stage of the Fire Excellence Awards for our global tunnel projects. The confined nature of tunnels presents a uniquely challenging environment where fire safety is concerned. Factors such as the length of tunnels, the difficulty of access, and the higher heat release rate from fire, make any delay even more critical than in other scenarios. As a result, at D-Tec, we are seeing growing interest in the deployment of Video Smoke Detection with its proven ability to identify smoke rapidly (typically in seconds). There is also the added flexibility which comes with the availability of IP based solutions such as FireVu."

The winners of the Fire Excellence Awards will be announced at a ceremony on the evening of Tuesday 12 May at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

About D-Tec
D-Tec part of AD Group - is acknowledged as the pioneer and world leader in intelligent video through its Video Smoke Detection (VSD), receiving the Queen’s Award for Innovation in 2003. D-Tec’s VSD and its FireVu IP based system which allows 24-hour remote monitoring of incidents - have been developed to overcome many of the problems associated with smoke detection. VSD provides solutions for previously unsolvable fire detection scenarios, working externally as well as internally and represents a true technological breakthrough in fire prevention.

The early detection of smoke whether it be in lofty, voluminous areas; where high airflows are present or even in external locations has always posed a problem to fire safety professionals. Practically, it is just not possible to place detectors close enough to the area of risk to provide an effective level of fire detection. In a large voluminous area such as an aircraft hangar or railway station there is a high reliance on the smoke overcoming distance, stratification and temperature layering before being detected. By effectively detecting smoke at source, VSD does not rely on the proximity of smoke to a detector and therefore is unaffected by distance. Whether the camera is situated 10 metres or 100 metres from a risk area, VSD will detect smoke in the same amount of time.
