Guide to Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

If you are a CCTV manufacturer,
what can this website do for you ....?

CCTV Equipment Classification - CCTV Cameras

Doktor Jon has thought for a long time, that life could be made a great deal easier for end users and specifiers, particularly if trying to compare equipment produced by different manufacturers.

At the moment, if you are interested in sourcing any equipment, it can be an absolute nightmare trying to compare like with like. To help address this situation, it would be hugely beneficial for the CCTV industry as a whole, if equipment manufacturers could be encouraged to adopt a standardised internationally recognised classification system for their products.

For example, with CCTV cameras the following universal classification codes could be considered:

1.Type - 2.Imager Size / 3.Lens Mount / 4.Resolution / 5.Package / 6.Transmission / 7. Power / 8.System

1.Type
B = Black and White (Monochrome)
C = Colour
D = Day - Night (Black and White or Colour)
F = Dummy (no electronics)
T = Thermal Imaging
IR = Infra Red (950+ nM response)

2. Imager Size
10 = 1", 12 = 1/2", 13 = 1/3", 14 = 1/4", 16 = 1/6", 23 = 2/3"

3. Lens Mount
BF = Barrel fixed,
BI = Barrel Interchangeable,
C = 'C' mount,
CS = 'CS' mount,
C2 = 'C' and 'CS' mount adjustable
LV = Fixed Varifocal Lens fitted
LZ = Fixed Zoom lens fitted

4. Resolution
LRB = Low resolution Black and White ( < 350 lines)
LRC = Low resolution Colur ( < 300 lines)
SRB = Standard resolution Black and White ( 355 > 500 lines )
SRC = Standard resolution Colour (305 > 400 lines )
HRB = High resolution Black and White (505 > 600 lines)
HRC = High resolution Colour ( 405 > 550 lines )
SHRB = Super High resolution Black and White ( 605 > 750 lines )
SHRC = Super High resolution Colour ( 560 > 750 lines )
M'x' = Megapixel e.g. M2 = 2 megapixel, M5 = 5 megapixel etc.

5. Package
BM = Miniature Bullet (> 75mm long - no IR),
BS = Standard Bullet (76 - 150mm long - no IR),
BL = Large Bullet (151+mm long - no IR)
BMI = Miniature Bullet (>75mm long - with IR LED's),
BSI = Standard Bullet (76 - 150mm long - with IR LED's)
BLI = Large Bullet (151+mm long - with IR LED's)
CV = Compact vehicle use,
CI = Compact internal case
CW = Compact weatherproof case
DM = Miniature fixed dome ( > 100mm diameter - no IR)
DMI = Miniature fixed dome ( > 100mm diameter -with IR LED's)
DMW = Miniature fixed weatherproof dome ( > 100mm diameter -no IR)
DMWI = Miniature fixed weatherproof dome ( > 100mm diameter -with IR LED's)
DS = Standard fixed dome ( 101+mm diameter - no IR )
DSI = Standard fixed dome ( 101+mm diameter - with IR LED's )
DSW = Standard fixed weatherproof dome ( 101+mm diameter - no IR )
DSWI = Standard fixed weatherproof dome ( 101+mm diameter - with IR LED's )
EX = Explosion proof cameras
F1 = Furnace and high temperature viewing cameras
H = Indoor covert camera casings (e.g. smoke detector, PIR, etc.)
IR = Specialist indoor Infra Red cameras
IRW = Specialist weatherproof Infra Red cameras
NS = Non standard design
P1 = PCB one board,
P2 = PCB two boards,
P3 = PCB three boards
PC = Miniature 'cased' PCB cameras
RI = Remote control PTZ internal dome camera
RW = Remote control PTZ weatherproof dome camera
SI = Standard Industrial 'box' type cameras ( 101+mm length )
SMI = Standard miniature Industrial 'box' type cameras (> 100mm length )
U1 = Underwater / immersible cameras

6. Transmission System
CB = Cable balanced ( twisted pair cable )
CU = Cable unbalanced (co - axial cable )
FO = Fibre Optic
IP = IP Network
WT = Wireless transmission

7. Power
AL = Low voltage AC (>30v)
AM1 = Mains AC - 110v
AM2 = Mains AC - 220>240v
DC = Low voltage DC (>30v)
DAC = Low voltage AC and DC options (>30v)
M = Multiplex supply (up the co-ax)
ML = Multiplex and Low voltage supply otions

8. Operating System
C = CCIR
E = EIAJ
D = Digital IP Network
P = PAL
N = NTSC
S = SECAM

So if for example, a prison wanted to source cameras suitable for monitoring general areas, the ideal product code might be as follows:- Example product code:- D - 13 / C2 / HRC / SI / CU / DC / P

This would equate to a Day & Night, 1/3" format, C/CS mount High resolution industrial 'box' camera , with co-ax output, Low voltage (12v ) DC power supply, operating on PAL Standard.
