| Dummy cameras are actually quite interesting devices (hold that yawn!), in that they tend to mean different things to different people.
To some, theyre a complete waste of money, and yet to others they firmly believe that they are a low cost solution to their problems. The truth of course, tends to fall somewhere in the middle.
For anyone buying, a cheap plastic imitation toy that is described by the manufacturer as an authentic replica of a real working camera, the only people likely to be taken in (apart from those daft enough to buy them) are the criminially gullible.
There are loads of nasty dummies on the market, and Doktor Jons best advice is .... avoid them like the plague.
Essentially there are two distinct types of dummy CCTV camera, those for indoors, and those for outdoors!.
The most effective way to provide a visible deterrent for an outdoor area, is to install a dummy camera (i.e. a working camera case without any electronics fitted inside) into a normal weatherproof camera housing. If the cables are fitted as for an operational unit, this helps to reinforce the deterrent message.
If there's the possibility you might install a working camera at a later date, make sure you use a housing fitted with a thermostatically controlled heater; you obviously don't need it for a dummy that's not working, but it could be useful later. To supplement the presence of a CCTV camera as a visible deterrent, its often extremely useful to place a number of warning signs in close proximity. The important thing though, is not only to situate the camera in a highly visible (and appropriate location), but also to position it in such a way, that it is not too vulnerable to close scrutiny, or attack!
