NETWORK AND INTERNET CONTROL - continued

Configuring a network enabled camera, or alternatively a unit being routed via a server may well provide attractive opportunities for quickly setting up new systems, without the time and expense penalties associated with providing a dedicated cable infrastructure, but then issues such as system security, network integrity and data protection, need to be considered in a wider context..

If a commercial camera system is installed for the protection of a building, its assetts and employees, the use of an existing data network for signal transmission, could leave the whole installation vulnerable in the event of network sabotage.

This particular aspect of CCTV development has really only been seriously considered in the last few years or so, and yet the pace of change does present worrying implications, particularly as its perpetuation is often based on a simplistic belief, rather than an educated understanding.

At this time, for any mission critical applications, or indeed anything other than just general publicly accessible web - cam usage, Doktor Jon is extremely reluctant to consider, much less recommend IP Video as the unique solution, or indeed as a complete alternative to conventional analogue CCTV.

Where remote sites are required to be monitored at minimal cost, Internet based control offers significant advantages, but it may be prudent to operate it in parallel with an existing autonomous system, and not simply be used instead of .....

For non security related applications, such as traffic monitoring, medical or zoological use, there is absolutely no suggestion that the network approach would in any way be considered more vulnerable to problems than a normal copper cabled system.

Although the CCTV industry will undoubtedly embrace this new marketing opportunity as the greatest thing since the BNC connector, Doktor Jon chooses at this time to reserve judgement, preferring instead to view the new technology as an exciting development, which should only be considered where it offers the most appropriate and affordable solution.
