TELEMETRY CONTROL SYSTEMS - continued

As well as allowing an 'off the shelf' receiver card to work with the manufacturers own transmitter units, by adopting these industry standard signal configurations, it becomes relatively straightforward to integrate different manufacturers products, as well as providing for bespoke PC / computer based control packages, to be used on the more elaborate installations.

In fact, a number of standardised telemetry protocols now allow a range of telemetry receivers to be driven, both from transmitter units and also some better spec'd Digital Video Recorders.

The transmitters can be supplied as a single camera desktop box, or a multicamera unit, designed for desk/19” Rack mount options.

The receiver units can be obtained either cased (standard indoor or weatherproof outdoor box), or alternatively as individual PCB ‘cards’ which can then be installed directly inside a weatherproof camera housing; the larger older receivers being especially suited to installation within a ‘deep base’ weatherproof camera enclosures.

Given the apparent component complexity of these sophisticated control systems, they are in general terms, surprisingly reliable.

But the old adage, that the more you have, the more there is to go wrong, still holds true. Telemetry equipment is generally not field serviceable, so if something does fail, a replacement board or unit will need to be installed.

It is important when considering the location for the equipment, to take account of all environmental conditions.

Extremes of cold or heat, can seriously affect the reliability of the complex circuitry, and under these conditions, basic preventative precautions (such as thermostatically controlled heaters, or directional cooling fans) should be considered at the very least.
