Guide to Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

CCTV cameras on the move

PAN ONLY OR 'MINIPAN' UNITS - continued

In some applications, a basic control unit is dispensed with, and the Pan unit is left connected to its power supply on the ‘autopan’ conductor; or if required, the autopan voltage can be turned on or off from a distance,
using a simple switch to provide a basic degree of control.

Full operational control normally requires a six core cable, and autopan only a three core cable, with conductors of a minimum 7/0.2mm, or 16/0.2mm for longer distances).

Although they are extremely quiet in operation, the use of these devices in security applications has somewhat been superceeded by the overall reduction in cost and increase in quality of modern CCTV camera equipment.

Whereas some years ago, a panning camera would be used in place of two fixed cameras, the cost / benefits ratio has now swung back significantly in favour of using fixed, rather than moving cameras.

In practice, the main applications for using these simple camera moving devices, are now based very much on process monitoring and scientific research applications, although it’s still possible to see the occasional moving camera set up, naively applied as an almost worthless deterrent in a high street retail environment.
