Crimes in camera. - It's been revealed that in one year, as part of Scotland Yards investigation of ninety murder cases, eighty six were significantly assisted by CCTV, and sixty five were actually solved through the use of Forensic Video Analysis. Within these walls - News from the US, where Miller County Sheriff Ron Stovall, has reported that most of the video security cameras installed in his local jail, have been ripped off the walls by prisoners. Justice in the slow lane - An innocent 21 year old man has been held in jail for almost a year on charges relating to a fatal shooting in Seattle. An arresting site - Still on the subject of statistics, in the 12 years since Lincoln City Council launched their CCTV system, cameras have resulted in over 20,000 arrests being made for a wide range of offences. Through the use of 124 Town Centre cameras, 1,500 missing persons have been spotted, and various incidents have resulted in fire crews attending on 335 occassions, and ambulances for 1,728 medical emergencies. - source - This is Lincolnshire.co.uk - 20th January 2009

Is this a record ...? - A long overdue upgrade to the CCTV recording systems being used in Lowestoft, Suffolk, has been put on hold "pending an organisational review". In June 2007, Waveney District Council agreed to update the 30 plus camera recording system to a full digital solution, costing an estimated £ 70,000, but some eighteen months later there is still no sign of any progress in improving a system that was first installed in 1998. - source - EDP24 - 21st January 2009

Council banks on camera enforcement - Councillors have decided that two CCTV cameras set up to monitor unauthorised punt operators, were not covert in nature. Camera captures clandestine killer - Police investigators in Moscw, Russia, have been hampered in their search for a gunman that murdered a prominent human rights lawyer, and a young woman journalist that tried to intervene. Bordering on the ridiculous - State officials in Texas are less than impressed with a $2m security camera scheme, which in a six month period resulted in just three arrests. Bog standard surveillance? - A 14 year old girl has been withdrawn from her school in Ceredigion, Wales, after her father complained about the installation of CCTV which he considered an "outrageous invasion" of privacy. Camera gets carried away. - A 33 year old woman has appeared in Blackpool Magistrates Court after having been caught stealing a CCTV camera worth £ 27.00, from her local diy store.
