CCTV Industry 'News in Brief' - July & August 2007

It's awards aplenty for Clovis based manufacturer Pelco , who has recently announced it's 13th consecutive win of the much coveted PSA Superstar Award, voted for by members of the PSA, and recognising outstanding performance within the US security industry. Within days, the company has also gained the prestigious Company of the Year award, from Frost & Sullivan. The award was made to demonstrate excellence in the North American video surveillance market; "Winning this award is indeed a great honour" said Scott Schafer, Pelco Senior Vice President, North American Sales and Marketing.


New from Sascal, the TOTEM Pole unit is a rapid deployment, integrated camera and record system. Providing D1 resolution recordings at real time speeds in either PAL or NTSC formats, the unit can be used for temporary applications such as outdoor events powered from internal batteries, or alternatively connected to a local mains supply for constant operation. The 500+TVL PTZ camera offers remote operation using a radio link, or whilst recording to an internal 700GB hard drive, providing a typical 21 day record duration. H.264 Ltd. have been appointed as the manufacturers agent.

At the recent Security Industry Association's (U.S.) 2007 New Product Showcase awards, Pelco have taken the prized Product Achievement Award for Video Storage and Distribution. Now in it's 30th year, the SIA recognised the PelcoUTP active transmission system as a worthy winner in it's class. The equipment is designed to transmit CCTV images over standard UTP cable up to 1200 metres, with built in Adaptive Technology to automatically adjust the signal at various frequencies, to produce an optimised image.

Specialist integrated circuit manufacturer Texas Instruments Inc., used the recent IFSEC trade show to launch their latest Da Vinci DSP devices, aimed at developers working in multi-channel video security applications. Typical applications for the new products include Digital Video Recorders and Video Servers, with the increased sophistication of the new devices, contributing to a significant reduction in both component count and cost.

Yash Patel, the Executive Director for CCTV Europe at JVC Professional Europe Ltd., has recently become the 550th member to be appointed to the Security Institute. He was officially presented with his certificate at the IFSEC 2007 event held in Birmingham's NEC .

The UK's Information Commissioner has published a draft review of the existing Code of Practice for CCTV Operators. The document which is intended to provide a rule book on data compliance issues, is available for review, with all comments required to be forwarded for consideration by October 2007. The draft can be downloaded from the Information Commissioners website.
It is expected that the final document will be published a short time after the consultation period ends.

Only weeks after celebrating their 20th anniversary, company officials at Clovis based manufacturer Pelco, have announced an agreement for the company to be acquired by Schneider Electric, based in Rueil-Malmaison in France.
Subject to full regulatory clearance, the $ 1.54 billion acquisition is likely to complete in October 2007, with no proposed changes to either personnel or manufacturing facilities.Commenting on the take over, Pelco CEO David L McDonald said " ... the right time has come to partner with a strong, high quality, Fortune 500 company such as Schneider Electric ... This exciting change opens the door for the next, dynamic new chapter in Pelco's future ..."

For the 3rd year running, specialist manufacturer Vivotek have been honoured with the Symbol of Excellence Award, confered by the China External Trade Development Council for their IP 7131/2 & IP7138/9 cameras.

Wavelet Technology have announced the launch of it's Open Platform Linux (OPL) operating system, to provide seamless integration of MegaPixel, Multi MegaPixel and conventional analogue cameras, in a single unit. Specialist IP Video equipment manufacturer Mango DSP, have launched their new Raven PC 104 Intelligent Video Server, which provides a ruggedised four channel device, incorporating video content analysis software. The unit is specifically designed to meet the Cisco Technology Developer Program criteria for compatibility with the Cisco 3200 wireless video router, providing enhanced flexibility for use in challenging applications.

Fluidmesh Networks, manufacturers of dedicated mesh networking systems designed specifically for video surveillance applications, have been chosen to supply their model 2200 units to provide a wireless network at the Las Palmas Airport on Gran Canaria.
