Guide to Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

A Covert Camera Conundrum

What are the hidden problems of using covert CCTV cameras?

The use of highly visible ‘overt’ cameras is obviously well documented throughout this site. However, their is little common understanding on the effectiveness of using hidden cameras, under certain conditions.

In the following section, Doktor Jon will hopefully dispel some of the many myths surrounding covert CCTV, and in so doing, put this much misunderstood technology in its rightful place as a thoroughly useful
technique, provided of course it is used responsibly.

'How dare they use hidden cameras to spy on me!!'

Doktor Jon knows that most people, if asked, would be absolutely horrified and appalled at the thought of any hidden surveillance cameras, being used to monitor their every movement.

Fair enough; but if the question was “under certain circumstances, would you still object if hidden cameras
had been used to confirm your total innocence”, their may just be an ever so slightly different response.
The fact is, it’s often not the installation of covert cameras which presents a problem, but the way in they are monitored, or indeed, subsequent recordings are analysed.
