Doktor Jons guide to Video Recording

At last we reach the stickiest of wickets, the dreaded Video Recorder.
For the last thirty or so years analogue video recording has been the only option, first with open reel tape machines, and more recently VHS and Super-VHS (S-VHS) cassette based recorders.

With the incessant march of the ‘Digital’ revolution, we now have a completely different technology, capable of almost breathtaking quality, and yet seriously misunderstood by many. To help you through the minefield of CCTV recording, Doktor Jon will attempt a degree of strategic clearance, to at the very least guide you onto the most appropriate path.

Revolution or not, Digital based recorders will continue to grow in popularity (often regrettably for the wrong reasons) whilst the older Analogue cassette units, will whilst gently fading from the market place, still continue to be around for some years yet.
There are also specialist video record systems designed to provide very high speed image capture, perhaps 10,000 images per second, which are used for process monitoring applications (more on them, later).

So, if you thought the whole issue of video recording was somewhat confusing, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
