Guide to Closed Circuit TV (CCTV)

So would you like to play "Spot the CCTV Camera?". Eagle eyed visitors may recognise the profusion of street furniture, surrounding a single heritage dome camera keeping watch over part of Londons' prestigious Oxford Street shopping area.

They say a picture is worth
a thousand words ....

Doktor Jon takes a look at CCTV Video Monitors

Whilst the camera + lens combination is pivotal to providing a decent quality image, it’s down to the humble Video Monitor to actually display a high quality picture. In terms of monochrome monitors (Black and White), the technology which is based on the good old fashioned Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), has barely changed over the last thirty years. The components may have improved, and production methods become more streamlined, but the resulting picture quality is on average, pretty much the same.

It’s only when we look at Colour Monitors, that there's now a noticeable shift starting to take place, towards the latest generation LCD flat panel displays. For much larger displays, particularly in custom built control rooms, Plasma Screens are creating a bit of a stir, although very recent advances in flat panel design mean that larger TFT displays are catching up fast. On the subject of control rooms, large video walls are increasingly becoming de rigeur, and a number of manufacturers now offer specialised display devices which are capable of driving a large array of monitor displays or projection systems, using a variety of video surveillance, graphics and data feeds.

So if image is everything, how best can you exploit current technologies, without breaking the bank?

Test Monitors - A range of small ‘engineering’ units suitable for setting up or testing larger systems.

Monochrome (B&W) Monitors - Just because the technology is old (established) and dependable ( cheap!) .....
Conventional Colour Monitors - Heavy and bulky they may be, but affordable and impressive still outweighs the disadvantages.

Flat Screen LCD displays - The shape of things to come; sleek, sexy and sophisticated ..... but enough about Doktor Jon!
Large panel Plasma displays - if you’ve recently won the lottery and you want to make a big impression, this should do it.

Computer displays- Using a browser to review network or Internet sourced images .... it’s all the rage you know!

Ten ‘must know’ things about Monitors - If you thought a monitor was just a TV with the extra bits chopped off .....
How to get the best from a Monitor - Setting up a monitor is kids stuff, just keep a box of tissues to hand.

What does what on a modern monitor - Controls and functions, ain’t always what they used to be.
